Bobby Cox Portrait

Because I am a big Braves Fan, I had to create something that would honor one of the greatest managers that the game has ever seen.  I might tweak this a little over time, but after several months waiting to finish, i am finally there.  This is my first attempt at a typographic portrait, and i look forward to doing more in the future.  And yes it is all type, even all the details in his face.  Enjoy

GRD 3000 Collage Ad

In this project I had to choose a company's logo from a magazine and give it a new tag line which also had to be found from a magazine.  Then I had to create three ads out of found imagery from magazines or other print as a collage.  Each ad had to stand alone but there had to be a cohesiveness between all three.

I chose Mac as my company and I used the logos from their three most known products: the iPhone, iPad, and iMac.  Then i found the tag line "Create New Realities" and took it in the direction that each device helps create some kind of realty for the user.

Progress work:

The iMac is used to create a new design reality.  Where a designer can create a new world for virtual games, a company's image in an ad, or even mini TV shows.

The iPhone is used to create a new reality through the change in technology.  This affects the world we live in directly.  I used a futuristic looking woman that looks like she is floating about the clouds and a clock to help represent that over time technology will change the way we live.
The iPad is relativity new and I am still finding out the new things that it can do.  One function that i found interesting was that you can create and edit videos as well as watch movies with the iPad.   So i wanted to create a feeling that the viewer is about to watch a movie right out of the ad.

I was pretty happy about this project, but found several difficulties with it as the project progressed. There are many aspects of my final pieces that i liked but i still want to go back in and change the layouts a little more to make them more aesthetically pleasing.

GRD 3150 Expressive Word

In this project I had to use typography to enhance the meaning of a single word.  I had to achieve this through exploring their expressive quality by manipulating the letter forms in a clever and aesthetically pleasing way.

The following was my prep work:

Then I started the designs on the computer:

I had a lot of fun working on this project and I would like to explore more words.  Maybe in the next month or two I can find an opening.

GRD 3150 Paragraph Indications

This project was to demonstrate a wide verity of ways to indicate paragraphs and to show how they affect the look and readability of the setting.

I was given the text that was to be used in the paragraphs and had to create 5 variations in the way i transitioned from one paragraph to another.  These variations had to range from conservative (very readable) to WTF (to most unreadable).

I really had a hard time deciding where i wanted to begin with this project.  But through some rough time and a long night, i got it done.

I am a little unhappy about how these turned out - but i guess that is what i get for rushing.  So look for a update with changes.

GRD 3150 Five Classic Typefaces Part Two

In this part of the project I had to use the Helvetica type face and the text given in the first part to create four new designs that were formal, readable, and upstanding.  Then we had to create a fifth one that was interesting but yet readable.  This was to help learn and understand hoe decisions affect the typographic communication.

I want to go back and work on these a little more for the future and i will keep my blog updated as I do.

GRD 3150 Five Classic Typefaces

This project was to introduce common ways of arranging type on a page.  We were given the text to be used in each part and a list of specifications for the first four designs and we had free design rang on the last one (Helvetica).  Each of the text is a brief history of the typeface and interesting facts.

I really enjoyed this project and learned a lot about the calssical type faces that i didn't know before.

GRD 3000 Personal Logo

This post is about my personal logo that I had to create for my first graphic design class (GRD 3000).

For this project I was hoping to create a logo that shows my more feminine (since i am in the military), my background in art as well as calligraphy, sophistication, and what i could bring to the design world.  The colors that i will be choosing are colors that i normally wear and they are autumn colors which represents the season that i was born in.

Here are a few of my sketches and progress work:

~The beginning

~Then I had to choose five and make five variations.

~ Now I have narrowed it down to 2 designs.

This is my final pick and in the layout that i turned it in with  (12x18 flush mounted on illustration board).

I still might go back to the other one of the final two - I am unsure why but i am still drawn to that one.  I just feel at this point it is the most incomplete one, so i turn in the other.  I also believe that both of them are strong designs and I would get an A either way.

I really enjoyed this project and was excited about creating an image for myself.

Please let me know your thoughts and if there is anything that you might change to either of the final two.
